Thank you for your reply! Last time I was playing around with Crossfire I was able to make a bastardized dictionary using its merge function on some word lists I found available for download online. But it was only a minor improvement over the Crossfire default dict, so I've been looking for alternate word list sources. Not sure yet if I want to fork over membership $$$ for cruciverb list access, but the Collaborative project sounds cool.

I shall look into it further. Sounds like you still need proof of paid cruciverb membership to join the CWLP though?

Knowing about the existence of CWLP now, I'm thinking a cruciverb membership might just be worth it possibly. Can you tell me how CWLP lists are different/better than the regular cruciverb lists though? What I'd really like to have in hand right now is a list of all NYT word entries (preferably minus theme entries). Do you know if this list exists somewhere? Most of the information should already be in the xwordinfo.com database but not in usable (list) form.

I guess in theory I could try to do some sort of web scrape to extract the word data off the xwordinfo server, but then I would have to learn how to do that and all. The membership fee for cruciverb is worthwhile if you're serious about making quality crosswords (and will pay for itself if you get published!). You'll want to have access to the clue database so you can make sure you're writing original clues. The collaborative list is better because, well, it's collaborative. There are two hard parts to making a good word list, collecting new entries and assigning scores to entries. The more hands (and these are good hands - talented constructors) the better. The problem with just getting a list of all NYT entries is that you would be lacking the scores, and therefore the software would have no way of prioritizing words for you.

I think cruciverb has an NYT word list, but I don't think it's scored. Also, if you have questions about constructing, don't hesitate to email the cruciverb mailing list. Everybody is super helpful and willing to share their expertise. When I first started, I emailed the list with a small question and received multiple offers of mentorship.
